SLY mission trip report On June 1st, a group of 32 youth and adult sponsors left from the church parking lot bound for Leadville, CO. We arrived around 6:00 that evening at First Presbyterian Church USA and met with our mission coordinator for the week. We thought we were going to work on various repair projects in the homes of elderly residents of Leadville. When we arrived we found that God had other plans for us. The First Presbyterian Church in Leadville needed repairs of its own and the Session had decided that this was what they wanted us to do. You see, Leadville had just had one of the heaviest winter snowfalls in 10 years. This church also has been without a full-time pastor for 7 of the last 10 years. Membership and attendance have declined over the years. Also, the average age of members is 65. Needless to say, the church needed several things repaired. They opened up accounts at the hardware and lumber stores in town and gave us a list of things they would like for us to do. We repaired a fire escape that had rotted out during the heavy snows, repaired a part of their roof that had a leak, painted the inside of a pre-school that they were running out of the church, repainted the exterior of the church, and built a wheelchair access to another of their buildings. These were the things that they had on their list. In typical SLY fashion, the youth determined that these were not enough projects for the week, so we also trimmed up all of the trees around the church, which were hiding the building, and cleaned out flowerbeds. The church sign was repainted and all of the playground equipment for the pre-school was repaired and tightened. A deck got a fresh coat of paint and windows were washed. To say the least, the church was shining like a new penny when we were through. The congregation was so appreciative that most of the active members made a point to come by at least once during the week and have a look and to say thank you. We finished the week by taking a white water rafting trip down the Arkansas River. God taught each of us a lesson about the willingness to be available and serve Him in whatever He needs at the time. Each participant was blessed by this experience. There will be a slide show and presentation about this trip at the SLY Mission Trip Kick-Off on September 7th at St. Luke. The Mission Committee will provide lunch. Tim Lacey Library, office relocated New books have been added to the library, which has been relocated to the northwest corner of the Fellowship Hall. These new items have been placed on a separate shelf that is marked for recent additions. We would be pleased for you to look at them and check some out. There is a clipboard and paper for you to sign your name, title of book, and date. The church office has been moved to where the library used to be, on the east side of the church. The intercom will be moved from the north door to the east entrance as soon as possible. If you come to the church office, knock at the east door to be allowed in. (You will see Sharon’s car parked there.) Expenses don’t take vacation The Finance Committee asks that we all remember to keep our “Estimate of Giving” amounts current during the summer months. We may take vacations, but bills for the operation of the church remain constant. Thanks for your support of St. Luke. Even though we have adjusted the budget by 10%, we could still have a deficit of $8,000.00 by year’s end. It is important that you understand that the money being spent in the new office and sanctuary are gifts of money that were designated for these two projects and that this money cannot be used for operating expenses or any other expense. |
